Speak Series: Gopher Tortoise Restoration Project
Guest Speaker: Dr. Nora Demers, Assistant Professor of Biology and Interdisciplinary Studies at Florida Gulf Coast University (FGCU).
Gopher tortoises are reptiles that occupy upland habitat throughout Southeastern United States. They are named for their ability to dig holes that in turn provide a huge commodity for other species of wildlife. Dr. Demers will describe its life history, status, and role as a keystone species. Then she will discuss the importance of habitat restoration, and the challenges of accomplishing effective land stewardship in (ever-increasing) urban environments.
