Zonta Sponsors LUNAFEST, A Women's Film Festival
Tickets are now on sale for LUNAFEST, a women’s film festival and fundraiser featuring seven unique short films hosted by the Zonta Club of Sanibel/Captiva on Tuesday, January 23 at the Sanibel Community House at 2173 Periwinkle Way. The films will be shown from 7-9 p.m. followed by a moderated discussion.
Begun in 2000 by the founder of LUNA nutritional bars, Kit Crawford, LUNAFEST is a traveling film festival dedicated to highlighting female filmmakers, raising awareness about women’s issues, and bringing women together. The event will showcase the following short works:
Yours Sincerely, Lois Weber: A tribute to the highest-paid silent film director at Universal Studios in 1916 by award winning cinematographer, Svetlana Cvetko
Fanny Pack: A comedy about a young Indian-American woman who wants to follow her dreams and a determined, fanny pack-wearing father who hopes that she will follow his. The film is the work of Uttera Singh, a recipient of the Ryan Murphy Diversity Fellowship.
Buttercup: A poignant film about a young woman’s journey through grief and the friend who helps her through it by Los Angeles-based actress and director Megan Brotherton.
Waiting For Hassana: A harrowing first person account of one girl’s escape from Boko Haram, the terrorist group that kidnapped 276 teenage girls in northeastern Nigeria in 2014, and her heart wrenching lament for her friend who remains unaccounted for. The film is the work of Ifunanya Maduka, a filmmaker and executive with Netflix.
Toys: A short animated film set in 1930s farm country where a father tries to toughen up his young daughter with toys intended for boys only to see his efforts backfire. The production is by New York actor, writer and director, Amanda Quaid.
Girls Level Up: A documentary about a young Pakistani woman from a conservative Muslim area in the Middle East who helps middle school girls realize their dreams of designing video games. The work is by Anne Edgar, a partner at Los Angeles-based Artifact Studios.
Jesszilla: A delightful short biopic by director and film maker Emily Sheskin that follows 10-year-old boxer Jesselyn Silva as she pursues her dream of becoming a professional athlete.
Tickets for LUNAFEST are just $20 and sales will benefit the Zonta Foundation of Southwest Florida, which distributes grants to local organizations that assist women in need, and Chicken & Egg Pictures. The latter is a non-profit associated with LUNAFEST that supports women nonfiction filmmakers whose works bring about social change.
