Job purpose
 
The person in this position is responsible for the grounds around SCCF/Sanibel Sea School facilities, including mowing, trimming and other landscaping needs, and will assist the Conservation Land Manager with maintenance of trails, public lands, and other land management activities that need assistance.  He/she will be responsible for maintaining UTV/ATV vehicles for the foundation, as well as small engine repair, including lawnmowers, chainsaws, hedgers, and other landscaping equipment. This person must be able to work independently or as a team.
 
 
Duties and responsibilities
  • Maintains landscaping of SCCF/Sanibel Sea School facilities and publicly accessible preserves/trails including:
- Mowing, trimming, edging, weed-whacking, leaf blowing, spraying of exotic plants, weeding
- Spreading mulch, shell, gravel, etc.
- Assist with plantings when needed
- Trim and remove trees in accordance with best horticultural practices.
  •  Coordinating preventive maintenance of equipment
                    - landscaping equipment (mowers, chainsaws, weed-whackers, etc.)
                    - heavy equipment (tractor, skid steer loader etc.)
     - small engines (fire truck pump, generators, etc.)
                    - all ATV/UTV vehicles
  • Documenting and keeping records of work conducted
     -Vehicle maintenance and repairs
     -Property name, activities conducted
  • Attend continuing education (CEU) courses that advance subject matter expertise when possible.
    - Exotics conference
        - Herbicide application courses/invasive species seminars
 
Qualifications
 
  • Education –1 year of experience or a high school diploma or GED and a minimum of 2 years of experience in the land management/forestry/agricultural field/heavy equipment operator/mechanical field.
  • Specialized knowledge – must have mechanical experience for using and troubleshooting small equipment engines (mowers, pumps etc.) and experience with heavy equipment operation and off-road vehicles.
  • Must have experience and can tolerate working outdoors in harsh (hot and humid) conditions and familiarity with the local flora and fauna.
  • Working knowledge of power tools
  • Ability to professionally interact with the public and collaborators.
  • Ability to demonstrate proper safety and application of herbicide in accordance with state regulations on wildlands.
  • Implement equipment maintenance schedules within manufacturer specifications.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and be at least 18 years of age.
  • Must have a positive attitude toward achieving goals and a sense of humor. Also, must have the ability to interpret the environment to make sound judgements based on changes in habitat and have high-level attention to detail.
 
Working conditions
 
Must be willing to work outside of the typical M-F 8:30 -5:00 work schedule if needed, such as evenings, early mornings and weekends for special events, monitoring projects, emergencies and deadlines.   Also, must be able and willing to work in adverse conditions, such as hot and humid weather with noxious plants and biting insects.
 
 
Physical requirements
 
Must be able to lift 50 lb, be able to work outside in the elements, and safely use herbicides to control exotic and invasive plants.
 
SCCF is a drug-free workplace, and the successful applicant will pass a drug screening test within two weeks of starting the position
